Michigan has thousands of miles of ORV trails. Here's how to make sure your ATV or UTV is properly insured before you ride.

ATV & UTV Insurance in Michigan: What You Need to Know

With over 4,000 miles of designated ORV (off-road vehicle) trails, Michigan is one of the best ATV and UTV destinations in the country. But many owners ride without proper insurance — and your homeowners policy almost certainly doesn't cover off-property use. Here's what you need.

Is ATV/UTV Insurance Required in Michigan?

Michigan does NOT legally require ATV/UTV insurance — but:

  • Required by lenders if financed
  • Required on some private trail systems
  • Required for road-legal UTVs in some Michigan municipalities
  • Your homeowners policy only covers ATVs on your own property — off-premises, you're typically uncovered

What ATV/UTV Insurance Covers

Liability

Injuries or property damage you cause while operating. Critical for trail riding where you might injure other riders, damage trail infrastructure, or hit a hunter.

Collision

Damage to your machine from accidents — hitting a tree, rolling over, colliding with another rider.

Comprehensive

Theft, fire, weather damage, vandalism. ATV theft is unfortunately common.

Uninsured/Underinsured

If hit by another rider without coverage.

Accessories

Plows, winches, GPS, aftermarket additions — schedule them separately.

Average ATV/UTV Insurance Cost in Michigan

  • Used ATV (under $5K): $100-$200/year
  • New ATV: $200-$400/year
  • Sport UTV (Polaris RZR, Can-Am Maverick): $300-$600/year
  • Work/utility UTV: $200-$400/year

Special Michigan Considerations

State Trail Permits

Michigan requires an ORV license and trail permit. Insurance doesn't substitute for these.

Public Road Use

Some Michigan townships allow UTVs on public roads. Where allowed, more liability coverage is recommended.

Snowmobile vs ATV Coverage

Different policies. If you have both, make sure each is properly insured.

Hauling

Your ATV is covered while loaded on a trailer (not in motion) under most policies. Verify before you tow.

Common Claim Scenarios

  • Rollover damage on rough trails
  • Collision with deer
  • Theft from trailer at trailhead
  • Passenger injury
  • Damage to another rider's machine
  • Property damage to private land

How to Save

  • Bundle with auto/home
  • Multi-vehicle discount (multiple ATVs)
  • Safety course completion
  • Secure storage (locked, covered)
  • Higher deductible

The Coverage Most Riders Skip (And Shouldn't)

Liability for guest passengers. If a friend rides with you and is injured, your liability covers them. Without coverage, you're personally responsible for medical bills — often tens of thousands of dollars for trail accidents.
