Driving without insurance in Michigan can result in fines, license suspension, and even jail time. But "having insurance" isn't enough — your policy has to include three specific coverages required by Michigan law. Here's exactly what those are.

The Three Required Coverages

1. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Required: Choice of $50,000 (Medicaid only), $250,000, $500,000, or Unlimited.

Covers your medical bills and lost wages after an accident, regardless of fault.

2. Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability (BI/PD)

Required minimum: $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident / $10,000 property damage (written as 50/100/10). Most carriers — including Farmers — write 250/500/10 as their standard starting point, and we generally recommend at least that level.

Covers serious injuries or property damage you cause to others.

3. Property Protection Insurance (PPI)

Required: $1 million

Pays for damage your vehicle causes to other people's property in Michigan (buildings, parked cars, fences).

Penalties for Driving Uninsured in Michigan

  • Misdemeanor — up to 1 year in jail
  • Fines of $200 - $500
  • License suspension for 30 days
  • Personal liability for all accident damages
  • Loss of right to sue if injured in an accident

Why Minimum Coverage Usually Isn't Enough

Minimum coverage protects you legally, but it doesn't protect you financially. Consider:

  • $10,000 PD limit won't cover most newer vehicles you might hit
  • 50/100/10 BI can be exhausted by a single moderate injury
  • No comp/collision means you pay out-of-pocket for damage to your own vehicle
  • No uninsured motorist means you're exposed if hit by someone without insurance

Coverages You're Not Required to Have (But Should Consider)

  • Collision — pays for damage to your car in an accident
  • Comprehensive — pays for theft, weather, vandalism, animal strikes
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist — protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or low limits
  • Mini Tort — recovers up to $3,000 for vehicle damage when you're not at fault
  • Rental Car Reimbursement
  • Roadside Assistance
