How the Farmers Signal App Can Save You 15% on Auto Insurance

The Signal app is one of the easiest ways to lower your Michigan auto insurance — but most drivers don't know how it works. Here's a complete breakdown.

How the Farmers Signal App Can Save You 15% on Auto Insurance

The Farmers Signal app is a free smartphone-based program that gives drivers a discount on their auto insurance for safe driving habits. Most Michigan drivers we enroll save 10-15% — but there are a few things to know before you sign up.

What Is the Signal App?

Signal is a telematics program — meaning it tracks how, when, and how much you drive using your phone's built-in sensors. It runs in the background and only collects driving data, not anything else on your phone.

What Does It Track?

  • Speed — particularly hard accelerations and sudden braking
  • Cornering — sharp turns
  • Phone Use — handling your phone while driving
  • Time of Day — late-night driving carries higher risk
  • Mileage — how much you drive monthly

How Much Can You Save?

Discounts range from 0% to 15% based on your score:

  • Just signing up = typically 5% participation discount immediately
  • After 60-90 days of tracked driving, your discount is recalculated
  • Excellent drivers consistently hit 12-15%

Can It Raise Your Rate?

In Michigan, Signal is "use-it-to-save-it" — meaning it can give you a discount but won't increase your rate even if your score is poor. Worst case, you get the participation discount; best case, you get the full 15%.

How to Maximize Your Signal Discount

1. Don't Use Your Phone While Driving

This is the biggest factor. Even handling your phone at a red light counts. Set it down once you start the car.

2. Brake Gradually

Hard braking events are the most common reason drivers lose points. Looking further ahead in traffic and easing off the accelerator earlier prevents this.

3. Avoid Sharp Acceleration

Squealing tires might be fun, but Signal sees it. Smooth starts.

4. Limit Late-Night Driving

Driving between midnight and 4 AM scores lower regardless of how you drive.

5. Use Cruise Control on Highways

Maintaining steady speed on US-131 or I-96 commutes generates lots of positive driving data.

What If You Have a Teen Driver?

Signal is especially valuable for teen drivers — both for the discount and because parents can see actual driving behavior. We've had multiple Michigan families discover (and correct) bad habits this way.

How to Enroll

If you're a Farmers customer, you can enroll directly through the Farmers mobile app. If you're not yet, Knight Family Agency can set up your Farmers Insurance policy and have you enrolled in Signal the same day.
