When exactly do I need to add my teen to my insurance?
In Michigan, a teen driving on a learner's permit is generally covered under the parents' policy automatically (though you should verify this with your specific carrier). You must formally add them to the policy the moment they get their official driver's license.
Does adding a teen increase my rates?
Yes. Statistically, teen drivers are the highest-risk demographic on the road, which causes premiums to jump significantly. This is why capturing every possible discount (Good Student, Defensive Driving) is so important.
Can I just exclude my teen from my policy to save money?
While a "Named Driver Exclusion" is legally possible in Michigan, it is extremely dangerous. If they are excluded, there is ZERO coverage if they ever drive your car in an emergency. If they cause an accident, you are personally financially liable for all damages.
Should I get a separate policy just for my teen?
Almost never. Placing a teen on their own separate policy is incredibly expensive because they have no prior insurance history, no multi-car discounts, and no multi-policy (home/auto) discounts. It is much cheaper to list them as a driver on your family policy.
